July 2015, Rising Sun Art Studio & Gallery opened its doors in Port Sanilac and continues to be a favorite stop for residents and visitors. It is unique in that it carries only Michigan made art and crafts.
Summering in the Port Sanilac area since the 1950s, when it came time for retirement Janet knew exactly what she wanted to do. Paints and brushes packed, she and her husband relocated to the area she fell in love with as a child and, with the help of her husband and daughter, Jen, opened the studio and gallery in a beautiful 1800s farmhouse located at 109 N. Ridge Street (M25).
Proprietors-Owners, Janet and Jen Townley, not only make gorgeous art to sell but, with over 50 years experience, Janet teaches one day painting classes using acrylic and watercolor techniques. Classes are usually 2-3 hours, laid back and fun. Students can bring snacks and/or non-alcoholic beverages and settle in for an inspired and comfortable class. Classes can be one on one or up to six students. There are several paintings to choose from ranging from beginner to advanced and all materials are provided. A great way to spend a fun afternoon.
Jen is a ceramic artist. She has been working in clay for over 20 years. Jen earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from College for Creative Studies in Detroit and works full time as an Automotive Sculptor for General Motors at the Tech center in Warren, MI. Jen hails from Ferndale, MI and works at the gallery part time. Jen specializes in porcelain which is her favorite medium. You can check out the gallery for some of her work.
“The gallery has been a dream come true for us and is truly a labor of love and our passion. We hope to continue for many years to come!” – Jen Townley
